Frontier adds 2 new Caribbean routes from San Juan

Frontier Airlines is getting set to launch two new intra-Caribbean routes this summer as part of a significant scaling up of its service from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Between mid-June and early July, the Denver-based ultra-low-cost carrier will launch new nonstop service from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) to Cibao International Airport (STI) in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, and to Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) in Barbados.

Even prior to these two routes, the carrier was set to grow its scheduled seats from San Juan by 38% this summer, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium.

That’s helped contribute to overall seat growth from San Juan topping 10% this summer.

The new San Juan service to Barbados and Santiago will give Frontier a total of eight routes within the Caribbean and Latin America.

Frontier already has — or is planning — service between San Juan and Cancun, St. Thomas and St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Punta Cana and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, and Sint Maarten.

Another head-to-head with a ‘Big Three’ carrier

Frontier also announced a new route within the contiguous United States that will launch this summer. Starting July 3, it will launch nonstop service from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to Miami International Airport (MIA).

Amid a massive network shake-up in the early months of 2024, Frontier has shown a willingness to fly between the hubs of the largest U.S. carriers, and this route — which will see it take on American Airlines — is no exception.

Still, the three-times-weekly service between the two southeast hubs pales in comparison to the 492 flights American will operate between Charlotte and Miami in July alone, per Cirium.
